Community Based Tourism
Community-based tourism provides an opportunity to experience destinations through the people who live there. Rather than simply passing through a destination, travellers can learn about local livelihoods, traditions, food, crafts, conservation practices and everyday life while contributing to tourism experiences that create opportunities for communities.
Across East Africa, communities are an important part of the tourism experience. Kenya's tourism strategy recognises community conservancies and cultural experiences as important tourism products and emphasises community participation and benefit-sharing. This approach can connect visitors with local guides, artisans, cultural groups, conservation initiatives and community-run tourism enterprises.
In Tanzania, travellers can explore the traditions of communities including the Maasai, Chagga and Hadzabe, while learning about local crafts, music, food and ways of life. Rwanda also provides opportunities to engage with local culture through initiatives, markets, cultural villages, traditional performances, crafts and community-based activities around destinations such as Kigali, Gishwati-Mukura and other parts of the country.
Community experiences can be combined with wildlife, hiking, cultural and conservation-focused journeys. Depending on the destination, visitors may take part in traditional cooking experiences, learn about local crafts, meet community guides, visit cultural centres, explore traditional livelihoods or support conservation initiatives.
