YOGA SAFARIS – KOI Travels

You can turn any adventure into a moment of wellness.

A wellness safari combines a regular safari experience with the opportunity to focus on mental and physical wellbeing while out in the healing environment of the wilderness. These special retreats include healing therapies like mindful movement and guided meditation, nourishing meals, privacy, and comfort. In addition, two traditional safari activities per day are included in the package.

On these safaris we fall in line with nature’s rhythm and find ourselves an integral part of it. There is no better place to remember your own true nature than in the wilderness. From this deeply aware and connected place we co-create with the healing of the planet.

The ancient practice of yoga blends seamlessly with the innate understanding that we form part of nature. There is a reason why yoga has been practiced for thousands of years and why people retreat to nature for solitude and reconnection. Now we bring these two together. And the wonderful thing about a yoga mat is that it can be carried anywhere, allowing you to practice in some of Africa’s wildest and most remote locations.

Imagine taking your yoga practice to the banks of a river where your focus point is a heard of elephants feeding below you or exploring tree pose beneath ancient trees. Before even setting off on safari in the morning you can expand your awareness in a guided meditation as a chorus of birds welcome the rising sun around you and lions roar in the distance.

Our wellness safaris are a special kind of retreat; like a much-needed holiday, only better, because they have the ability to be life-changing! Join us at some of our favorite camps to unplug, harmonize your body, mind, and soul, and get your natural rhythms back on track.

Wilderness and Wellness trips can be booked in a retreat style for groups as well as for couples or individuals looking to add a new element to their African trip. Another key feature is that because you are travelling with your private wellness guide, these trips are not limited to specific locations; instead in consultation with our knowledgeable team this experience can be taken to any of your dream destinations.

Our yoga teacher is trained in vinyasa, ashtanga and feminine yoga flow. Malaika teaches a gentle yet deep flow that invites her students to explore their inner world and body through movement and breath. Her classes are inspired by the wisdom and teachings found in Nature and she teaches with the intent of inspiring and cultivating freedom through deep inner intimacy – to Self, body, breath and each moment.

 This is true transformational travel.

The hotel has 10 individually named and themed en-suite rooms and one suite. All the rooms have TVs, WiFi, individually controlled air conditioning and tea and coffee making facilities among a host of other amenities including fresh flowers. After a day of exploring Nairobi, you can relax in the serene gardens or spend the afternoon at the pool.

 KAREN BLIXEN CAMP

The Camp is situated in southern Kenya on the north-western border of the famed Maasai Mara Reserve in the Maasai Mara North Conservancy. With the impressive escarpment in front of the Camp, and the great Mara plains behind the Camp where the Mara River provides the focal point – the location is spectacular. The river runs the length of the property and provides a constant source of water for the thirsty plains game that come to drink throughout the course of the day including zebra, impala, elephant, giraffe and many more, whilst the resident hippo pod in front of the restaurant provide hours of entertainment as they spend their day frolicking in the river.

Karen Blixen Camp offers an authentic ‘yesteryear’ experience for visitors wishing to gain that little extra from their safari. Most of the Camp furniture has been specifically designed and made for Karen Blixen Camp to fit in with this exciting era gone by.

Karen Blixen Camp comprises large luxury canvas tents, each placed with privacy and undisturbed views along the Mara River. The stylish restaurant, the reception, the lounge and bar and the gift shop with internet are set on a raised wooden deck and furnished with accurate reproductions of Karen Blixen’s private furniture to fit in with the cozy atmosphere.

The beautifully laid swimming pool offers relaxation and even a little exercise in-between game drives. Our resident masseuse offers a wide range of wellness and beauty treatments.

Karen Blixen Camp is the perfect place to sit back and relax with a gin and tonic overlooking the Mara River and the wildlife coming to drink, whilst exchanging stories about the adventures of the day.

Activities offered from camp: Game drives; Guided bushwalks; Birding; Hot Air Balloon safaris; Cultural visits.

 WATAMU TREEHOUSE

The first version of the house was created in 1992 as a single room home where the Krystal family came for their holidays. Over the years, the house expanded and the family’s “endless summers” – full of nature adventures, healthy-food, and yoga – evolved into today’s Watamu Treehouse.

Watamu Treehouse co-exists with the original coastal forest of Watamu. The towers were built on existing clearings in the forest without cutting trees and with the intention of preserving the forest.

All the rooms have their own unique design and personal touches and allow guests to experience the magnificence of the daily sunrise and sunset, overlooking indigenous forest and the ocean.

Relax on one of the verandas or the sublime rooftop lounging spaces. Grab a fresh smoothie and chill out. This is life in a treehouse. The food is sourced locally, it’s made fresh, it’s delicious and – best of all – it’s served with love.

 Activities offered from the treehouse

Mida Creek is one of the richest jewels in the Watamu area, and some of the most unique activities are our guided trips in Mida – on Kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), walking, swimming, or floating with the tides. The best ways to explore the creek – peacefully paddling and swimming in unspoiled nature. Also on offer is turtle watching, kite surfing, diving and dhow trips on Mida creek. Other sightseeing options nearby are Gede Ruins, Arabuko Sokoke Forest, Bio-Ken snake farm, Shopping at Shakirs, and a day trip to Che Shale or Malindi. The property also boats a beautiful spa.

OLOLO LODGE

Ololo Safari Lodge, owned and run by an Australian farming family, offers the warmth and comfort of a home with effortless style and personalized service.  Originally an old Kenyan homestead and since converted to a small lodge, Ololo is perfectly situated, on the beautiful banks of the Mbagathi River which forms the southern border of the Nairobi National Park.

The lodge is a mere 45-minute drive through the park from Nairobi and both main airports, yet the lodge’s secluded location feels like a world away. Set on a productive 20 acre working farm Ololo offers the joys of delicious ‘paddock to plate’ fresh ingredients. With their established and secluded gardens, guests can settle in and soak up a unique safari experience.

Ololo’s rooms are unique and diverse, each tastefully appointed with attention to historical detail. The accommodation at Ololo ranges from the farm’s old, converted stables, tented cottages under Makuti thatch and to the original suites in the main house of the lodge.

Activities offered from Camp: Excursions into Nairobi; game drives into the park; visit Ololo farm and the furniture workshop; Spa; excursion to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage.
