RECOMMENDED FORÂ
HIGHLIGHTS The Turkana region is a UNESCO heritage site. It offers up some of the richest evidence of man’s earliest roots. This is evident in the fossil beds that are well-preserved within the Rift walls. To reach Turkana you will journey by helicopter over the vast and varied topography and beautiful expanse of the dusty Northern Kenya. Our helicopter day trips from here take you to see some of the most breathtaking sights. Fly over the desert, through the barren rocky landscape where you will suddenly set eyes on the volcanic island within the ‘Jade Sea’. On your return, you will fly over the pink sea of flamingos before touching back down in Turkana.Â
WHEN TO GO As the world’s largest permanent desert lake and the world’s largest alkaline lake, Lake Turkana supports a rich lacustrine wildlife and a very dry, hot climate. The warmest, driest months are October to January while July and August are the coolest. During this period the area is subject to strong southerly and southeasterly winds. The total annual rainfall is less than 200 mm and is unpredictable though most likely between March and May.Â
GETTING THERE After a full breakfast at the Manor you will be taken by road to Wilson Airport to catch your scheduled flight to Nanyuki. At Nanyuki airstrip a Solio vehicle will be awaiting your arrival.Â
EXPERIENCE Solio Lodge is sandwiched between the rolling green Aberdares and Mount Kenya. Its high altitude and position between these two dramatic mountainous regions means that it has a perfect climate of cool nights and warm days. The wildlife is easy to view, with large numbers of all plains game, rhino and lion. Game drives are leisurely in this sanctuary, which was Kenya’s first private wildlife reserve. The wildlife is easy to view, but intense with large numbers of all the plains game, rhino and lion.Â
STAY AT The Turkana Basin Institute near Lake TurkanaÂ
GETTING THERE At about 0630 your helicopter will land just in front of the lodge – a short stroll across the lawn and you’ll be taking off for your morning adventure which might include a stop in the Suguta Valley and Lothgam. Lothgam is the first of the fossil sites you’ll visit.Â
EXPERIENCE The Turkana Basin Institute is a research and educational facility. It is not a luxury lodge, but it gives access to a place that tourists have never been able to visit before. The next few days will be divided with time in the cool of the labs during the heat of the day and time out and about around the area. A visit to central island will give a unique insight to ancient fishing practices and walks to the nearby villages will also allow for an opportunity to meet the Turkana people. You will also learn about everything from dinosaurs to our ancient ancestors.Â
TIP: Mikey Carr-Hartley recently travelled to Lake Turkana from Solio Lodge. Click here to read about his experience.Â
