MARA SAFARI
Maasai Mara, also known as the Maasai Mara National Reserve, is a renowned wildlife reserve located in southwestern Kenya. It is named after the Maasai people, an indigenous ethnic group known for their rich cultural heritage and traditional way of life. The reserve is situated in the Great Rift Valley and covers an area of approximately 1,510 square kilometers (580 square miles).
Key features of Maasai Mara:
Maasai Mara is considered one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, offering an immersive wildlife experience and an opportunity to witness the wonders of nature up close. Its combination of stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and vibrant Maasai culture makes it a truly remarkable place to visit.
When you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met and driven to Wilson Airport for your Governors’ Aviation flight to Masai Mara. The flight takes around 45 minutes and you fly over the scenically beautiful Great Rift Valley. On arrival in the Masai Mara, it’s a short game drive en route to Governors’ Il Moran Camp, followed by a delicious lunch on the deck, overlooking the Mara River. Embark on a thrilling afternoon game drive at around 3:30pm and return in the dusk for drinks and chatter around the sunken fire pit, before your dinner. Fall asleep to the night-time chorus of the Masai Mara!Â
Governors’ Il Moran is hidden in the cool shade of the riverine forest that follows the meanders of the Mara River. Each of the ten spacious tents are furnished to a superior standard and enjoys a private location within a serene setting. Beautiful recycled old wood furniture and muted natural tones are a natural extension of the environment around.Â
Arise early each morning to make the most of your spectacular location. Each day will offer you the option of three game drives within the Mara National Reserve, immersing yourself in this rich wildlife destination.Â
Depending on what you feel like, we have a range of activities to keep you occupied either side of game viewing; Masai village cultural visits, walking safaris, visits to some of our responsible tourism community initiatives located nearby – or – you can simply sit, take a siesta or book yourself in for some of our safari spa treatments!Â
For a particularly memorable and unforgettable experience, enjoy a surreal journey in a hot air balloon, with Governors’ Balloon Safaris (please note that this is an extra cost), over the Masai Mara plains.Â
This adventure begins just before dawn; depart the camp at 5.15am to the Governors’ Balloon Safaris take off site, located just behind the nearby Little Governors’ Camp. The fabulous sunrise flight lasts approximately one hour depending on weather conditions. On landing, sit down to a delicious bush breakfast, freshly cooked on balloon burners in the middle of the Mara plains. Toast your return to Mother Earth together with your pilot over a glass of sparkling wine. Game drive back to your camp.Â
After an early morning game drive and breakfast at Il Moran, pack your bags for the next leg of the safari, with a game drive across the breadth of the Masai Mara to Keekorok airstrip where your Cottar’s Camp guide will meet you. Arrive at Cottar’s Camp in time for a late lunch and then an afternoon at leisure – or spend the rest of your day exploring the private 7,600 acre conservancy and its rich wildlife. The camp’s unique location provides easy access for both day and night game drives, guided bush walks and cultural interactions with the Maasai community.Â
Extending an era of luxury and quality, Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp returns to the original spirit and essence of a safari experience; an abundance of wildlife, a guarantee of privacy and the highest standards of professional guiding within a luxurious and authentic camping environment.Â
Your days at Cottar’s 1920s Camp offer stellar wildlife sightings and amazing photographic opportunities. A spa offers a tantalising array of treatments between activities while a swimming pool with a view is the perfect retreat from the afternoon heat.Â
Enjoy a last early morning game drive before heading to Keekorok airstrip after breakfast. On arrival in Nairobi, you will be met and transferred to a restaurant for dinner (to be paid direct). After dinner, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your international flight home.Â
