THE SLAVE ROUTE
Zanzibar, an East African archipelago, played a significant role in the Arab slave trade. From the 9th century onwards, the island became a hub for capturing and transporting East African slaves to the Arab world, the Middle East, and India. In the 19th century, Zanzibar became a major slave market under Omani rule, driven by the demand for labor in plantations. The British pressured the Sultan to abolish the slave trade in 1873, officially ending legal slavery in the region. Today, historical sites like the Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town and the Slave Route walking tour commemorate this dark period in Zanzibar’s history.
