MIGRATION SAFARIS – KOI Travels

MIGRATION SAFARIS

The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is the largest single movement of wild animals in the world, deservedly listed as one of its eight Natural Wonders and an inspiration for wildlife enthusiasts to look forward to a safari adventure to Kenya and Tanzania. More than 1.5 million wildebeests, with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles alongside with trailing predators, leave their calving grounds in southern Serengeti, around March and April, heading for the next water source. Migrating via the south-central Seronera outskirts into the Western Corridor and Grumeti River arriving during the month of April to May and residing until June, and then finally move towards the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya crossing the perilous Mara River around July or August with a return via the same death-defying river, this time heading towards the eastern Serengeti around October to November. The wildebeest journey returns to the southern Ndutu calving grounds with arrivals starting around December and remaining in the area until March. The migration takes place right through the year as the wildebeest continually seek fresh grazing and water as the seasons change. It generally follows a similar path that is relatively predictable. The precise timing of the wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.

Find below a very general breakdown of more or less where the herds are during the year, bearing in mind that the entire migration is triggered by rain, which can be early, late or “on time”:

Southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area – December to April

Central Serengeti – April to May

Western Serengeti and Lobo Valley – June to July

Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara – July to October

Migration return to the South – October to December
